In the Spring of 1959 Francis Scott of Georgetown Memorial Hospital and I. E. Helmey of McLeod Hospital, with the support of Ms. Ruth Puehler and Kenn Gallier, their Administrators, organized the Pee Dee Chapter of Hospital Engineers, which met monthly at member hospitals.
About this same time, Del Cranford of Chester County Hospital organized the Piedmont Chapter of Hospital Engineers.
In April of 1960 Francis Scott, Engineer, Mr. Ruth Puehler, Administrator of Georgetown Memorial Hospital, Del Cranford, Engineer, and the Administrator of Chester County Hospital met with Jim Neeley, Executive Secretary of the South Carolina Hospital Association to discuss the possibility of forming a personal membership section in the South Carolina Hospital Association for hospital engineers.
In May of 1960 a meeting for hospital engineers was held at Kershaw County Memorial Hospital to evaluate the interest in forming such a society.
In June of 1960 the South Carolina Society of Hospital Engineers was organized by twenty-five engineers at a meeting at Orangeburg Regional Hospital.
